WELCOME!

Northern Vegans was founded in May of 2006 by seven people interested in creating a social and educational forum to promote the benefits of a vegan lifestyle and foster a healthy and compassionate society. We are located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.) on the south shore of the great Lake Superior.  Group participation is varied with people of all ages and walks of life bringing with them diverse perspectives. There are no membership fees or sign up forms (other than for our general email list). All are welcome—vegans, vegetarians, and those who are veg-curious. We believe in individual rights and freedoms for ALL.

Why Vegan (veegan)

The term vegan was coined by Donald Watson in 1944.  Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals.

For The Animals

“Ethically they had arrived at the conclusion that man’s supremacy over lower animals meant not that the former should prey upon the latter, but that the higher should protect the lower, and that there should be mutual aid between the two as between man and man. They had also brought out the truth that man eats not for enjoyment but to live.” –Mahatma Ghandi

For Human Health

“We have found that people not only slim down, but also see their cholesterol levels plummet and their blood pressure fall. If they have diabetes, it typically improves and sometimes even disappears. Arthritis pains and migraines often vanish, and energy comes racing back. Sluggishness vanishes, and they look and feel radiant.” –Dr. Neal Bernard

For The Earth

“Let’s start with the most prominent ecological crisis of our time: global warming. When you look seriously at the numbers, you find that switching from a meat-based to a plant-based diet would do more to curb and reverse global warming than any other initiative.” –T. Colin Campbell

For Social Justice

“Ethical veganism results in a profound revolution within the individual, a complete rejection of the paradigm of oppression and violence that she has been taught from childhood to accept as the natural order. It changes her life and the lives of those whom she shares this vision of nonviolence. Ethical veganism is anything but passive, on the contrary it is the active refusal to cooperate in injustice.” –Gary L. Francione

General Vegan Information

There is so much great vegan information out there, but it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out where to start, so we pulled together a short list to get you headed in the right direction.

See List

Veg-Friendly U.P. Dining/Groceries

Our area of the country is not known for its vegan fare but with a little creativity you will be able to pull together some tasty options. You can help us out by requesting vegan options every time you eat out.  With enough of us requesting, restaurant owners will realize how much of a market there is for healthier plant-based dishes.

Veg-Friendly U.P. Businesses

Help us support vegan-owned U.P. businesses.  Let us know of businesses that should be added to this list.
